While driving to work today, my wife and I were discussing about how to perform in career and life to produce the best outcome. And we both agree that we ought to do it without feeling burnt out. Yes, we like to be more productive, but we both would like to reduce or stop (if possible) bringing work to home. It is common in our household to see both of us in different corner of the house doing our readings or research work till late night. It is a fact that on some nights, we both just feel so creative and driven, that we open our laptops and start working on our research work or googling for answers.
I remember that once my 8th grade teacher shared this with the class,
"Heights by great men reached and kept were
not obtained by sudden flight but, while
their companions slept, they were toiling
upward in the night."
As he shared a snippet of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, he mentioned about what we ought to do if we dream of success. I literally kept those lines in my heart, and while I was in undergraduate, I shared that to my class when I was asked to give a speech in class. I didn't know who authored the lines but I said it was from my 8th grade teacher. Only much later, I did encounter those lines in one of the poetry books I bought from amazon.com.
And today, nearly twenty years later, these lines still is close to my heart. And I'm thankful that my 8th grade teacher shared those lines with us in class and made me think about what will it take to be great, and what we must be ready to do if we want to be great.
As for both of us, we certainly feel that we ought to prioritize and manage our task better so that our time is well spent. Every second counts. My 8th grade teacher certainly did not waste any time sharing these wisdom. Bravo!
